<title>Welcome to the Mount Shasta Region...</title>
			<link>http://www.shastahome.org/mount-shasta-travel-center/welcome/welcome-to-the-mount-shasta-region....html</link>
<description>The Mount Shasta Region Travel Center offers visitors an extensive resource to the North State communities, state national parks, wilderness areas, recreation opportunities relocation information. Discover the natural beauty of the Mount Shasta Region in Siskiyou County and the recreational paradise of Shasta County in Northern California!Discover the North State... Snowcapped Mt. Shasta with all its grandeur towering high in the blue sky stands alone and massive in size, isolating itself from the rugged peaks that surround it like a lonely pyramid in the desert. As it rises 14,162 feet above sea level, it can easily be seen for more than 100 miles when you&amp;#39;re traveling on any highway leading from Shasta County into Siskiyou County. The northern approach up the Sacramento River Canyon, on the winding stretch of Interstate 5, offers tantalizing glimpses through the gaps in the canyon&amp;#39;s walls, and then suddenly the Mountain materializes into full view as you drive up from the canyon floor. California&amp;#39;s Sacramento Valley begins in Redding and stretches downward until it merges with the San Joaquin Valley. From Redding and just about any area in the North State, Mt. Lassen rises 10,457 feet above sea level and dominates the region&amp;#39;s seven national forests. With several state parks, Lassen Volcanic National Park, the Trinity Alps and the California Coastal range, it&amp;#39;s no wonder why this area is sometimes called Gods Country&amp;#39;s or a Recreation Paradise . With common names such as the Cascade Region, The North State, and Jefferson Territory, it&amp;#39;s most often just referred to as the Mount Shasta Region. Before the days of automobiles and highways, the pioneers traveled to to the North State either on foot or horseback. John Muir, nature writer and avid outdoorsman, spent a lot of time in the late 1800s exploring our beautiful mountain and its surrounding area. The following quotation describes how he felt and what he saw when he had his first glimpse of Mt. Shasta in 1874. When I first caught sight of it [Mount Shasta] over the braided folds of the Sacramento Valley I was fifty miles away and afoot, alone and weary. Yet all my blood turned to wine, and I have not been weary since. John Muir </description>
