National Grassland, Macdoel, Dorris.  With America's tallest flagpole west of the Mississippi.

ImageLocated between Mt. Shasta and the Oregon Border on Hwy 97. The two main town are Dorris and Macdoel. Dorris was named after Presley Dorris, who, with his brother, owned a huge homestead cattle ranch in Butte Valley. In 1870 the Presley brothers left their homes and went to Modoc County where they built a bridge which is on the site now called Alturas. Dorris boasts having America's 2nd tallest flagpole at 200ft or the tallest flagpole west of the Mississippi River.

The neighboring town of Macdoel shares the same rural lifestyle as the good folks in Dorris. Ranching and farming are abundant in the rich basin land and supports plentiful wildlife including birds, fowl, deer, and antelope.
